Black Stars: A Retro Brushed Handwritten Font for Editorial Charm

Black Stars in a Lifestyle Blog Redesign

When I began reimagining the header for a small but growing lifestyle blog, I wanted something that felt personal yet polished—like the writer was speaking directly to the reader. I tested several Script Handwritten fonts, but Black Stars stood out for its neat rhythm and retro warmth. The font has a soft, intentional brushstroke texture that feels organic, not overly stylized. As a display font, it’s ideal for blog headers and article titles where personality matters more than precision. Black Stars brings a human touch to digital layouts, which is exactly what the blog needed to feel more intimate and editorially grounded.

Black Stars for Ebook Titles and Chapter Openers

Working on a recipe ebook layout, I found Black Stars to be a perfect fit for title pages and chapter openers. The font’s clean yet expressive strokes add visual interest without overpowering the content. Since it’s PUA encoded, accessing alternate characters was seamless, allowing me to customize the look for each section. For example, the “B” in “Breakfast Bowls” and the “D” in “Desserts & Drinks” were subtly different, adding a layer of typographic nuance that elevates the reader’s experience. While it’s not ideal for body text due to its decorative nature, as a headline font in Fonts categories, it adds editorial flair that supports content structure and brand identity.

Black Stars in Digital Magazine Covers and Feature Pages

When designing a digital magazine cover for a quarterly wellness publication, I needed a font that could anchor the visual tone without competing with imagery. Black Stars delivered a soft, approachable energy that complemented the magazine’s aesthetic. The retro brushstroke style worked especially well in pull quotes and cover titles, where the font’s personality helped set the editorial mood. Because it’s a Script Handwritten typeface, it felt more personal than a standard serif or sans serif, making it a strong choice for feature pages that aim to connect emotionally with readers. On screen and in PDF exports, the font maintained clarity at larger sizes, supporting both readability and visual hierarchy.

Black Stars for Printable Planners and Workbook Layouts

Testing Black Stars in a printable coaching workbook, I found it to be a strong option for section headers and motivational quotes. The font’s retro charm and alternate characters gave each page a custom-crafted feel, which is essential for content meant to inspire and guide. Since the font is PUA encoded, I could easily access stylistic alternates directly in design tools like Canva and Illustrator, streamlining the layout process. However, I avoided using it for body copy or detailed instructions—its expressive nature is better suited for short, impactful text. When paired with a clean sans serif for body text, it created a balanced visual flow that supports both structure and mood.

Black Stars for Newsletter Headers and Social Media Graphics

For a creator-focused newsletter, I used Black Stars in the header graphic to add warmth and approachability. The font’s retro brushstroke style made the design feel more human and less automated, which aligned with the newsletter’s tone. It also translated well into social media graphics, especially for quote-based posts and event announcements. Since it’s a display font, I kept the usage to titles and highlights, avoiding small text sizes where detail could be lost. On mobile screens, the font remained legible at headline sizes, which is important for maintaining readability across devices. If you're working with Fonts in a digital content brand, Black Stars offers a soft, editorial-ready voice that supports audience engagement.
